Student Report: Study Abroad - University of Bonn (Ms. Mika Nishimura)

早稲田大学―ボン大学の連携プログラムとして、ボン大学のAndreas Schlitzer教授の研究室で教育・研究指導を受けた西村 美郁さん（修士課程1年）の体験談をご紹介します。

As part of the Waseda University–University of Bonn collaborative program, we introduce the experience of Ms. Mika Nishimura, a first-year master’s student, who received research supervision in the laboratory of Professor Andreas Schlitzer at the University of Bonn.

Impressions of the Host Institution and Environment/ Differences from Japan
滞在先の印象・日本との違い

I had the impression that each laboratory was very friendly with each other, and that they timed their lunch breaks together as much as possible. Also, unlike in Japan, I felt that the custom of greeting each other in passing, even if you do not know each other, inside or outside of the laboratory, was very warm and friendly.

お昼休みはできる限りタイミングを合わせるなど、研究室ごととても仲が良い印象がありました。また、日本とは異なり、研究室内外に関わらず、面識のない相手同士でもすれ違い際に挨拶を交わす習慣は、とても温かく感じました。

My Experiences During the Program
滞在先での体験談

I was very impressed to participate in a carnival, which is a part of German culture, led by the members of the International Office of the University of Bonn and Rector (Prof. Hoch) and Mrs. Hoch. It was a very traditional event in which the whole town participated, everyone dressed up in costumes and catching snacks thrown from the carnival vehicles. I felt that being able to experience cultural activities that are rarely seen during private sightseeing stays was one of the best parts of an exchange program, as it allowed us to interact with the local people.

ボン大学international officeの方々、ボン大学Hoch学長夫妻先導の元、ドイツ文化の一端であるカーニバルへ参加したことがとても印象的でした。みな思い思いの仮装をし、カーニバル車が撒くお菓子などをキャッチするカーニバルは、街全体が参加するとても伝統的な行事でした。プライベートの観光滞在では中々経験する機会の少ない文化的活動に触れられたことは、現地の方々と関わる交換留学ならではの醍醐味の1つではないかと感じました。

What I Gained from the Experience for My Future Career
滞在して良かったと思う点・今後に活かせると思う点（成長したと思う点）

My English skills are still under development, but having been in an environment where I needed to communicate in English was good practice for my English and allowed me to objectively look at my own English level. In addition, realizing how difficult it is to communicate in English with my English skill now has given me motivation to improve my English skills. I feel that the experience of working on a different topic in an overseas laboratory and being exposed to foreign cultures were both valuable experiences that broadened my perspective.

私の英語スキルはまだまだ未熟ですが、日々英語でコミュニケーションを取る必要がある環境にいたことは、英語スキルの良いトレーニングになった上、自分の英語レベルを客観視することができました。また、英語でのコミュニケーションの難しさから、英語スキル向上に対するモチベーションが生まれました。海外研究室で普段とは異なるテーマに取り組んだ経験や、海外の文化に触れた経験はいずれも自身の視野を広げる貴重な経験になったと感じています。
