Student Report: Study Abroad - University of Bonn (Mr. Boxiao ZHAO)

As part of the Waseda University–University of Bonn collaborative program, we introduce the experience of Mr. Zhao Boxiao (趙 伯驍), a first-year master’s student, who received research supervision in the laboratory of Professor Waldemar Kolanus at the University of Bonn.

早稲田大学―ボン大学の連携プログラムとして、ボン大学のWaldemar Kolanus教授の研究室で教育・研究指導を受けた趙 伯驍（ZHAO Boxiao）さん（修士課程1年）の体験談を紹介します。

Impressions of the Host Institution and Environment/ Differences from Japan
滞在先の印象・日本との違い

I found the University of Bonn to have an excellent research environment, with a large number of doctoral students creating a vibrant atmosphere. The supervisors provided very thorough guidance, and the lab members kindly answered any questions I had. In terms of daily life, the local people were very friendly, allowing me to lead a fulfilling life.

ボン大学は、とても優れた研究環境が整っており、博士課程の学生が非常に多く、活気に溢れていると感じた。また、スーパーバイザーの指導がとても丁寧で、研究室のメンバーは質問に対して親切に答えてくれた。生活面では、現地の方々がとてもフレンドリーで、充実した生活を送ることができた。

My Experiences During the Program
滞在先での体験談

I had a great time at the Carnival in Bonn, participating in a costume party at the lab, joining the “Rose-Monday” celebrations with staff from the International Office of the University, as well as sightseeing in Cologne.

ボンのカーニバルで、研究室で仮装のパーティーに参加したり、ボン大学インターナショナルオフィスのスタッフと一緒に「バラの月曜日」に参加したり、ケルンに観光したりしたことが楽しかった。

What I Gained from the Experience for My Future Career
滞在して良かったと思う点・今後に活かせると思う点

Interacting with a diverse international community at the University has deepened my cross-cultural understanding and sharpened my communication skills. Additionally, the research skills I have acquired through my research project will be a strong foundation for my future career in academia.

様々な文化や国籍の学生が集まるボン大学での、異なる文化背景を持つ人々との交流を通じて、異文化間の理解が深まり、異文化間コミュニケーション能力を向上させることができた。また、研究プロジェクトを通じて培った研究能力は、将来的にアカデミアで活躍するための強力な助けになると信じている。

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who supported the realization of this exchange program. I am deeply grateful to the host Kolanus Lab, to Linda, Aya, Thomas, and Karolin, for supervising me. Over the six weeks, I was able to experience so much, and it was an incredibly valuable memory.
